KATHRYN CHOY MOY (AGE 92)

On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved wife of the late Henry K.L. Moy; mother of Clifford (Claudia) of Rockville, MD, Calvin (Michelle) of Silver Spring, MD, and Colin (Clorinda) of Castro Valley, CA; grandmother of Vincent, Christopher, Cameron and Nathaniel Moy; sister of Mui Chin and the late Christopher Tsoi. After raising her three sons, Kathryn “Kitty” Moy started a new career as a draftsman at a well-known engineering firm in Silver Spring. Following her retirement and the untimely passing of her husband Henry, she stayed active in the community with volunteer work that included assisting staff at the local library; 18-plus years of service with “Meals on Wheels”; and raising money on her own to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She had a special place in her heart for children who were suffering with serious illnesses. Hobbies that held a special passion for her included gardening, sewing, knitting, cooking, and travelling around the world. But her primary focus and contact in life was always her many close friends, family, and especially her grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, on Sunday, October 14, at 10 a.m. Interment private. Marion Gough Joyce

Public Relations Professional, Brookside Gardens Volunteer

Marion Gough Joyce, a public relations professional, volunteer at Brookside Gardens, and longtime resident of Silver Spring Maryland and Rose Haven Maryland, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2018, after a long battle with cancer.  Marion was born on November 8, 1942 in Washington, DC, to the late Ethel Fuller Gough, an Executive Assistant with Norfolk Southern Railroad, and Eugene Arnold Gough, a Metallurgist with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

In addition to her husband, Charles (Chad) Joyce, Marion is survived by daughter, Joan Catterton and her husband Ronald Catterton of Owings MD, son, John Joyce and his wife Tracy Joyce of Riva, MD, daughter, Janet Barlow and her husband Thomas Barlow of Woodbine, MD, and six adult grandchildren: Kelsey Catterton, Kara Joyce, Nicolette Joyce, Alanna Joyce, Thomas Barlow and Christopher Barlow.

Marion grew up in Silver Spring with fond memories of summers spent at her family’s beach cottage on the South River in Edgewater Beach, MD, where she learned to swim, took a water rescue course and enjoyed crabbing, fishing and boating with friends and family.  Later she would enjoy taking her own children to the community beach where she had spent so many of her childhood years.

Marion graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD, where she met Chad, now a retired accountant and banking executive, and raised two daughters and a son.  She was a very caring and active mother, engaged with her children in activities at the Langley Park Boy & Girls Club, Girl Scouts, Long Branch swim team, and was an active volunteer member of their schools’ Parent Teacher Associations and St. Camillus Catholic Parish, having converted to Catholicism in 1972.

Despite an unpleasant first-time family sailing experience on a windless, hot summer day in 1973, Marion and Chad developed a lifelong love for fair weather sailing, exploring the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. They liked cruises and travel to tropical Caribbean islands and the Florida Keys where they enjoyed sailing, parasailing, snorkeling, and fishing. One of many highlights was when Marion caught a large Wahoo in Aruba, which the resort’s chef prepared and she shared it with everyone in the entire dining room.

While raising three children, she attended Montgomery College in Takoma Park and the University of Maryland, College Park, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Journalism and Public Relations.  During her career in public relations, while at the Adams Group, she started the “Taste of Bethesda” restaurant, food and music festival.  She explored her adventurous side while employed at Re-Max by riding in one of the company’s iconic hot-air balloons. Later she served as the Community Relations Manager and spokesperson for Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission (MNCPPC) and Montgomery County Planning Board.

One of her favorite places for more than 40 years was Brookside Gardens. She visited many times, enjoying the ornamental public display gardens within Wheaton Regional Park. After retiring, she became a Brookside Gardens volunteer and coordinator for the annual garden of lights during the holiday season, arranging events and schedules for hundreds of volunteer singers, musicians and other entertainers.

Marion also had a love of music, photography, drawing and painting botanical stills and “Bayscapes” which she pursued after retirement.  She combined her passion for writing and photography into a 25-year project documenting the lives and activities of her children and grandchildren in multi-volume photobooks.  She painted life-size portraits of each grandchild during their senior year in high school as graduation gifts.  She played the piano and led family Christmas carols during Christmas Eve celebrations at home.

A Celebration of Marion’s Life for friends and relatives will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2018 from 11 am to 3 pm at Herrington on the Bay Yacht Club, 7151 Lake Shore Drive, North Beach, MD 20714. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.

In Loving Memory of Dep Tan Long, a Woman of God, a Devoted Wife, and a Caring Mother of Ten Blessed Children

August 7, 1925 – September 20, 2018

Dep Tan Long was born in Cambodia on August 7, 1925, the youngest of seven children of Tan Long, who was one-half Portuguese and one-half Khmer (Khmer is native Cambodian with Indian heritage), and Vui Quite, who was Cambodian (mainly of Khmer and Chinese heritage).  Dep embraced her Portuguese-Cambodian heritage as a great blessing to her.  At age 19 she married her love partner, Phum Sem, who was well educated in the fields of economics and finance.  With Phum having influential skills in commerce and notable education with degrees obtained in the US from University of California, Berkeley and Georgetown University, he later became Governor of the province Prey Veng located in southeastern Cambodia, and then President of Banque d’Agricole, a government-owned bank of agriculture operated in Phnom Penh, Cambodia before 1975.  Dep and Phum became very prosperous together in life and were able to afford having and providing for ten children of their own whom they devoted their life to raising at their great-loved home in Phnom Penh.  While Phum was the overseer of their children’s education, Dep shared important disciplinary responsibility in building solid foundation for their household based ultimately on biblical teachings, which she and Phum believed life would not be fulfilling without understanding and applying the word of God.  Even with ten children, Dep and Phum never stopped taking in relatives and other people who needed their support.  Their unconditional love for family and passion to help others in need became life model for their children to follow.  Before 1975, Dep and Phum sent their second and third oldest children abroad to pursue college education, one to the US and the other to France.  Not long after, Dep’s family life began to turn upside down on April 17, 1975 when her remaining household family members were forced at gunpoint by political communist regime Khmer Rouge to leave their home and to start trekking north, along with other Cambodian civilians, toward the wilderness where they would soon face severe famine and torturing death inflicted by Khmer Rouge, especially if anybody was revealed to have any sort of formal education at all.  Because the objective of Khmer Rouge was mass murdering of all educated citizens and implementation of an agrarian society with emphasis on their Year Zero political notion, Dep’s family became a major target.  Phum was the first in the family to be taken away by Khmer Rouge soldiers for execution.  Next was her son-in-law, followed by her next two oldest sons ages 16 and 17. Death and more death of her children continued to occur forcing her to shut off her emotion to try to stay strong as she buried her own child one after another.  By 1978 when this genocide movement came to a halt by aid of the South Vietnamese army, Dep ended up with only three surviving daughters , ages 8, 10, and 17. She and her three daughters were later sponsored to come to the US on November 30, 1980 by her eldest son Sompheap (third of ten children), who was already living in the US since 1973 before Cambodia collapsed in 1975. After all the trials and tribulations she had experienced, Dep became more and more dependent on the grace of Almighty God for divine strength to help her live on purpose.  Indeed she found the greatest purpose of her life – prayers.  She often prayed to God for intercession to help her overcome difficulties and to restore Cambodia and heal its people from traumatic effects of the Khmer Rouge genocide.  Her faith in the living God Lord Jesus Christ became unsurpassed when He appeared to her in a vivid dream back in 1987. Dep repeatedly told her children how surreal the dream was that she was falling from the sky and was so terrified.  And just when she was near hitting bottom a Man with long hair caught her in his arms and told her to hold on tight to him, and as she did the Man ascended in supernatural speed taking her with him.  Although back then her children ignored any significance about the dream, Dep remained faithful to God and never ceased to pray to Him.  Her greatest hope was for every person to come to know God in Jesus Christ because she trusted that He is the Messiah, the only One Who can heal the brokenhearted and has the ability to help bridge the gap between religions, cultures, and traditions for integration of the human race as a whole.  Through her faith in Christ, she became more and more like Him as she found strength to forgive even the most heinous act as that inflicted by the Khmer Rouge on her family.  She had learned to trust the Lord to be her Vindicator and received His forgiveness of her own sins as well – from past, present, and future.  In latter part of her elderly years, Dep was blessed with devoted care from her loving daughters Pheary and Phally.  On April 19, 2017, Dep re-affirmed her faith in Christ by baptism, as confirmed by her beloved home church St. Jane Frances de Chantal, located in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.  She chose to be baptized during the Easter season as a dedication of her love for and utmost gratitude to the Lord and her deep personal relationship with Him for He had healed her broken heart and comforted her soul.  A few months before her passing, Dep knew that her life mission here on earth would soon be complete.  She mentioned before Phally and Pheary that God was calling her to go home.  And indeed, she has departed peacefully and is now home resting in the Lord.  Amen

Michael Russell Brigham “Mikey” (Age 36)

Suddenly on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, of Montgomery Village, MD, formerly of Olney, MD. Loving son of Linda and Russell Brigham; brother of Dawn, Michelle, Richard and Lindsay; grandson of Rosalie Brann and the late Russell Brann. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews,cousins and fiance, Kerryanne Flannery. Mary Wiener Crawford (Age 79)

On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, of Rockville, MD.  Beloved wife of the late Donald J. Crawford; mother of Robert B. (Mark C. Nielsen) and Brian C. (Sarah) Crawford; grandmother of John “Jack”, Sophia, Delaney, and Finnegan; twin sister of Anne Snyder and sister of the late Ted Wiener; sister-in-law of Ed Snyder and Sally Wiener.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA and raised in Kingston, PA, Mary graduated from Marywood College in Scranton in 1961.   Upon graduation, she moved to the Washington, DC area where she taught elementary school before marrying Don.  After their wedding the couple moved to White Plains, NY where Mary continued to teach until the birth of their boys before relocating back to Rockville, MD. After raising her sons, she worked at the National Institutes of Health until her retirement in 2004. . Mary was a longtime resident of Fallsmead, where she enjoyed playing bridge with her neighborhood club.  She was also a parishioner of St. Raphael’s Parish where she volunteered for many years, and a loyal supporter of Gonzaga College High School.  Mary was famous for her “meals on wheels” which provided comfort and nourishment for friends and family during difficult times and proudly considered herself a “professional volunteer.”
